Summer and Winter on Four Shafts

Summer and Winter on Four Shafts

We will start at the beginning by understanding the tie ups, threading and treadling rules for Summer and Winter, a tied-unit weave. O’s Fashion, X’s Fashion, Singles and Dukagang –these characteristics will be discussed and how they are an integral part for weaving Summer and Winter. We’ll review the exciting four shaft ‘hybrid’ version of Summer and Winter and dig into other interesting/untraditional ways of weaving this structure. Summer and Winter is a block weave as well as a unit weave structure, so we’ll focus on block and profile drafting, essential for interpreting existing Summer and Winter drafts, as well as designing S/W drafts on your own. Discussion will lead us into polychrome Summer and Winter. Interactive participation is encouraged. Please feel comfortable in asking questions throughout the sessions.

Instructor will send pdf booklets for weavers to print out prior to class. These materials are very extensive and will make a nice addition to their weaving libraries.

Prior to class, each participant will be sent a Summer and Winter 4 shaft pdf draft that they will use for their Summer and Winter sampler, along with sett and yarn suggestions so that their looms are prepped and ready to go for the class. Once in class, students will have weaving breaks to take the leap from discussion to hands-on weaving so that they are comfortable with weaving Summer and Winter. Participants will be encouraged to share their results, warts and all, with their fellow weavers.

  • This class is designed for Beyond Beginners and Above – must be weaving on a Jack or table loom for the workshop. Participants must have prior experience weaving on four shafts and are comfortable in reading and understanding a weaving draft. (Weaving software is a plus, but not required.)

  • Participants must have a loom to bring. Looms are available at the Weaving Center for use for a $50 charge. You will have access to the Weaving Center 3 days before the workshop (Monday-Wednesday) to get the loom warped and ready. You will also have access to your loom the week following to finish any work.

  • $325 which includes all materials

Jill Staubitz

I fell in love with weaving about 12 years ago after retiring from a career in graphic design. I became an artisan at the Hartford Artisans Weaving Center and began teaching as well as weaving my own creations. The Pandemic led me to teach online classes with the intent of building a community of weavers who could stay connected while weaving at home.

I love teaching structures in a simple, understandable way. My greatest delight in teaching when participants have that lightbulb moment and feel confident enough to design and create their own cloth.
